Brixham

If you want a holiday that all the family can enjoy year after year, Brixham is the place you need to be heading.

Everyone knows that Devon holidays are one of the finest things that this country has to offer, not only because it is the most likely place to receive glorious sunshine but because of the vast range of things to do for people of all ages.  Brixham is a great resort and in its most traditional form is a large and active fishing port that is steeped in history.  A statue of William of Orange in the harbour reminds people in the area of the day he landed in 1688 and of the historic heritage that this area still has to offer.  The area is also home to Mitch Tonks, who is Devon’s celebrity chef and restaurateur and who is a big hit with many local residents.

Only thirty minutes away from the harbour is Berry Head and if you are one for reliving a bit of history, this place is perfect. On the site there is a Napoleonic fort that was built to protect nearby Torbay against threatened invasion by French armies. The Berry Head to Sharkham point walk is also a must for bird watchers. The rare and endangered species depend on the thin limestone soils, mild climate and exposed conditions of the headland that this area is famous for.

Central to Brixham is the Golden Hind which is an exact replica of Sir Francis Drake’s iconic flagship. It’s a great opportunity for anyone interested in history to learn a lot more about the life of one of the world’s most famous sailors.

For the younger and perhaps more adventurous ones amongst you, Brixham and surrounding areas offer fabulous beaches, great golf courses and plenty of places to eat. There is also an open-air 25m seawater swimming pool at nearby Shoalstone, which is the only one of its kind and is sure to get the active ones in your family excited and more importantly, kept busy to give you time to do some shopping in the quaint local villages nearby.

Brixham is within reach of many a Devon caravan park including its own Brixham Holiday Park,  and all these offer a great base to explore the area

So if you want a slice of history or a great beach holiday, Brixham has it all in abundance and never fails to disappoint.
